The American Eagle is issued by the United States Mint, and has been in production since 1986. The Eagle contains one troy ounce of pure gold; however you will find these coins a little heavier than most, it contains a small amount of silver to harden the coin leaving the average purity at 91.67%. The Eagles design on the obverse was designed by Augustus Saint-Gaudens who originially designed the Saint-Gaudens twenty-dollar gold piece, which was produced from 1907 – 1933. The design on the Saint- Gaudens twenty-dollar piece is the same as the Eagle. The reverse of the coin shows a nest of Eagles, which is meant to signify strength.
